Meet Ted Stewart
Award-winning artist Ted Stewart has spent decades celebrating Ontario's birds and wildlife through woodcarving and painting. His individually carved wildfowl sculptures range from pieces that preserve the wood's warmth and natural grain to exquisitely painted works of remarkable realism. His birds may appear to drowse quietly, perch in watchful stillness or seem poised to take flight. Ted’s connection to the natural world also finds expression on canvas. His paintings portray wildlife and the environments they inhabit, while some works move beyond observation into more imaginative and dreamlike interpretations of nature. A respected member of the regional arts community, Ted was one of the original artists of the Rideau Lakes Studio Tour when it began in 1999 and remains a much-loved participant today. He has served as an Artist in Residence in several national parks, and his work has been featured in numerous newspaper and magazine articles as well as an episode of Regional Contact on CTV Ottawa. Ted also shares his considerable knowledge as a judge at woodcarving competitions throughout Eastern Ontario. More recently, an enthusiasm for birding and bird photography has brought him even closer to the subjects that have inspired so much of his artistic life. At the heart of Ted’s work is an enduring fascination with the character, beauty and quiet presence of the natural world.
